Ethics and artificial intelligence: transparency and responsible use

Artificial intelligence raises ethical and legal questions that any business should consider: privacy, bias, transparency and accountability. This article outlines principles for the responsible use of AI and how to apply them in digital and marketing projects.

Why does AI ethics matter?

AI can replicate or amplify bias in data, affect decisions about people (hiring, credit, customer service) and process sensitive data. Irresponsible use damages trust, can breach regulations (GDPR, discrimination) and creates reputational and legal risk. Ethical use means transparency, control over data and human review where it matters.

Practice: ask what data has trained the systems you use and whether bias has been evaluated. In processes that affect people (screening, scoring), keep human review and appeal options. Don’t delegate sensitive decisions to AI alone without oversight.

3. Transparency to the user

Users have a right to know when they’re interacting with an automated system (chatbot, recommendations) and, where relevant, to be able to speak to a person. Transparency doesn’t mean explaining the algorithm in detail but informing clearly and offering alternatives when it matters.

Practice: in chatbots and auto-replies, state that it’s an assistant and offer a human contact option. For content or recommendations generated or filtered by AI, consider a note in the privacy policy or in the interface. Follow guidelines in your sector (e.g. advertising and deepfakes).

4. Responsible use of generated content

AI-generated content (text, images, voice) can be used to deceive (impersonation, fake news, invented reviews). Responsible use means not generating false content that harms others, disclosing AI use when regulation or trust requires it, and respecting copyright and image rights.

Practice: set an internal policy: what can be generated, what is always reviewed and what is never published without verification. Don’t use AI to create reviews, fake identities or content that pretends to be from someone else. Check tool terms (rights over outputs, commercial use).

5. Accountability and human oversight

When AI makes decisions or produces output that affects people or the business, someone must oversee and be accountable. AI is a tool; accountability is human.

Practice: define where AI only assists (suggests, prioritises) and where it can decide on its own. Where the decision matters (hiring, credit, published content), keep a human in the loop. Document who reviews and who responds to complaints.
